GUEST BLOG: Blogging for Tradies: 7 tips to help grow your business

Writing a blog post is something that most tradies probably want to avoid. But did you know that blogging is a great way to grow your trade business?

Gone are the days where you can set up a snazzy website and forget about it. Nowadays, Google favours fresh, high-quality content, so, by creating regular blog posts, you could rank higher on Google, generate more site visitors, and of course – get more business.

And with 93% of online experiences beginning with a search engine, it’s no wonder blogging holds the secret to winning more business.

Whether you’re thinking about kick-starting a blog for your trade business, or you’ve already got one up and running, I’ll be sharing the benefits of blogging and my top tips to help you get the ball rolling.

Why you should start a tradie blog

Did you know that up to 77% of Internet users read blog posts? Nowadays, your clients search for more than a qualified tradesman. They often want to learn about your business and connect with you first. And creating a blog isn’t just a great way to form new relationships with potential clients; it can also showcase your expertise, skills and knowhow – which helps to build credibility.

Creating regular blog posts won’t just give you a nice boost on Google, you can share your work on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or with your mailing list. This will engage your audience and bring traffic to your website.

Now we know that blogging is a sure-fire way to get seen online, so let’s get down to the nitty gritty and look at my top tips for success.

Blogging for Tradies – 7 tips to help you get started

  • Allocate Regular Time

Often, blog writing can drop to the bottom of our to-do list as more important matters come up. But if you allocate regular time in your schedule, you can help yourself stay on track. To avoid falling behind, it’s best to write several posts as a batch. You can then choose whether to publish your posts weekly, fortnightly or monthly – and remember, consistency is key for blogging. Choose a regular timeframe, schedule it and stick to it.

  • Choose a Topic

You want to choose a topic that is relevant to your business. To give you some ideas, you could introduce your team, share industry insights, share expert tips or write a case study about a recent job. An excellent place to start is by reviewing the frequently asked questions or “FAQ’s” your clients or potential clients ask. You’ll often hear the same questions asked time and again, so your blog posts can help to answer these.

  • Think about your audience

Remember to ask yourself – who am I writing this for? How well do they understand this topic? By gaining an understanding of exactly who your audience is, you can write content that engages them. That could mean holding back on using industry jargon, and explaining things in a simple, easy to understand way. Because chances are, many of your clients won’t understand the ins-and-outs of your workplace.

  • Draft and revise

Finally, it’s time to get writing! Combine your audience research with a touch of creativity to write a clear and engaging blog post. It’s important to use subheadings and bullet points – as this will break up blocks of text and keep it interesting.

Always remember to proofread your work. Having a flawless blog tells your audience you’re professional and meticulous.

  • Include a Call to Action

Once you’ve given your audience valuable information, it’s a great opportunity to present a Call to Action. A Call to Action usually comes at the end of a blog post – and it outlines what you want your audience to do. Examples include giving you a phone call, emailing you, signing up to your mailing list or booking a site inspection.

  • Publish

Now for the exciting part – you get to publish your blog post online! But it’s not time to kick back just yet, you have to share your post with the world.

  • Promote your blog posts

The best way to get eyes on your post is by sharing it on social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn. You can also share it with your mailing list or you could ask an associated business to publish your post on their website, with a link back to your site.

By following these 7 tips on blogging for tradies, you will be well on your way to attracting more visitors to your site, and ultimately, getting more clients.  For best results, remember to create regular blog posts on a variety of topics, as this will build a strong collection of articles to demonstrate your know-how.
